چکیده
This article explores the history of MYRRHA research reactor currently under construction at Belgian Nuclear Research Centre (SCK CEN). The demonstrates that large instruments has obtained an essential role in moral economy modern nuclear laboratories. First, analysis on internal discussion within center reveals how MYRRHA’s transformation from a commercially oriented project into transmutation machine was primarily characterized by wish to upscale project. Second, focus European landscape collaboration led further upscaling project, having address technological requirements fit roadmaps. Third, emphasis interaction between and political public sphere shows constructed narrative made seem future center. Based archival material background interviews with key players, this contributes our understanding development Big Science post–Cold War era western Europe.

Big science, little science.
In the USA, where I live and work, it is well known that I have little love for structural genomics—the attempt to determine the structures of most or all of the proteins in an organism by some combination of high-throughput X-ray crystallo graphy, nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy and homology modelling. My reasons are a matter of public record: structural genomics is based on an assumpt...

There has been a “Cambrian explosion” of big data systems proposed and evaluated in the last eight years, but relatively little understanding of how these systems or the ideas they represent compare and complement one another. In enterprise and science situations, “one size is unlikely to fit all”: we see analytics teams running multiple systems simultaneously. However, the highest level of abs...

The mouse is a surprising model system to study vision in. It mainly navigates by smell and touch, and doesn’t actually see all that well. It doesn’t have a fovea — the high performance central area of our visual field that we tend to point in the direction of the things that we are consciously looking at — and the resolution of its retinal image across the visual field resembles our peripheral...

D uring development, cells need to communicate with each other to establish properly organised and functional tissues. Cells communicate with each other in various ways, such as by secreting and receiving diffusible molecules (morphogens, hormones, and neurotransmitters) or by establishing intercellular connections (gap junctions and cell protrusions) to allow a direct exchange of instructive f...

Francis Hamilton, the Briton who fi rst described zebrafi sh (Danio rerio) in 1822, would be astounded to see the scientifi c attention now afforded to this two-inch-long native of Indian rivers. A fi sh with no economic worth was how he described this little creature. Yet recently, the European Union awarded 12 million Euros to the ZF-MODELS research consortium to study zebrafi sh models for h...
